Race Across West Update!

America's premier ultracycling race event is only one week away. We're hoping to see you at the race start in beautiful Oceanside, California for a little celebration.

This race is a truly unique sporting event which begins at the famous Oceanside Pier and ends 930 miles away in Durango Texas.

If you're in California, stop by for a tailgate party, grab some drinks and food with us and give our riders a big send off. The race start is well attended and a spirited event, and you'll enjoy it.

Our male/female team "The Scorpions" are ready for a great race.

Both our riders have competed recently, even after our Johanna suffered an accident and injury. High level competitive athletes are very inspired to compete.

And this 930 mile race over mountains and deserts will certainly give them a test of their stamina and determination.  If you're a cyclist yourself, you'd understand the joy of riding over such vast terrain. See more on the Race Across the West route.   It's on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (June 11,12 & 13) so overcrowding shouldn't be an issue.

You can track the rider's progress too during the event.  Make sure to select the “RAW” event. Updates will be posted starting on June 11th at noon PDT.

More About the Tuesday, June 11th Race

For the race, each rider brings two specialized, high tech, aerodynamically designed bikes for speed or climbing steep mountain passes. They'll have plenty of drinks with electrolytes and high carb food. Two support vehicles will carry the equipment necessary and provide a place for a brief rest. Only two days of continuous riding and one rider must be on the road at all times, day or night.

They'll be wearing these amazing race shirts with the ManageCasa™ logo!

Nutrition for an Ultracycling Race

Given racers may burn 10,000 to 20,000 calories, nutrition is a priority. Racers use a mix of glucose and fructose for maximum performance.

Competitor's hydration levels must be monitored given the demands on the body, and the fact that the desert region is so dry.

Racers wear special cycling shorts and cycling shoes designed for use with racing bikes. They "clip in" to their pedals to allow them to apply power through a full turn of the crank. This creates more power and is better for their leg muscles.

Jolanda did break her wrist 5 weeks ago, but she is ready to go next week. Astonishingly, on May 11th, she finished 2nd in the Texas State Time Trial championships.  That's dedication and love for a sport.

Our other team finished 7th in a 33 hour, 383 mile race event through the Appalachian Mountains in Pennsylvania. After burning 14,423 calories, Uli is still eating to recover now.

Please join us for a little tailgate event to send off our racers on June 11th.  We're preparing an email campaign to people in a 50 mile radius of the race start in Oceanside. Check out the location on Google Maps now.
