Covid 19 Vaccinations

Covid Vaccinations to Date

The good news is that vaccinations are being carried out across most nations, including the US, and infections are declining. Testing has increased in the US and the positivity rate is dropping. And funding for vaccinations is increasing.

The bad news is only half of the doses are being used.  And deaths remain high while new variants of the Covid 19 virus are a growing threat. While the UK variant was not much of a story a few weeks ago, infections are rising and could overwhelm the health care system by April.

Most of the data cited below originates from the US Center for Disease Control and was accurate at this time of writing. Please do visit the CDC website for the latest updates.

41.4 Million Doses of Vaccination Shots So Far

The CDC reports 41.4 million vaccination doses have been administered to date in the USA. 3 million of those were second doses. Only half of the vaccine doses distributed have been administered so far. However, West Virginia, North Dakota, South Dakota, New Mexico, and Connecticut have 60 to 70% rates administered thus far. The vaccination rate in New Mexico doesn’t seem to have eased the outbreaks in that state.

California is the new epicenter of Covid 19. The state has reached 3 million infections and 33,333 deaths so far.

According to a CNN report, Covid-19 hospitalizations are now under 21,000 patients, and available ICU beds remain low, now down to just 1,113 ICU beds available across California. A full third of cases are in LA county, where the California regional stay at home order remains in effect.

The second dose is the shot that builds immunity up to the 95% level. It’s astonishing the logistics needed to get these vaccination shots distributed. As retail drug stores become more involved, we might the vaccination numbers rise faster.

While some countries are experiencing drops in Vaccine supply, the US appears to be going fully steam and is actually exhausting the available supply from Pfizer and Moderna.

The Race to Herd Immunity

The sooner everyone is vaccinated, the quick our lives can return to some state of normalcy. The economic recovery, rental housing market, landlord wellness and community health all depend on preventing infections and getting vaccines distributed.

Data shows young people from the teens through to the 50’s are most infected. New infection rates among Latino populations is of grave concern.

USA Covid 19 Infections

This chart from the CDC shows infections in the last week, county by county. In the deep part of the winter, it is strange that the worst counties are in southern California and Southern Arizona. Those in the cold north, who were expected to see rampant growth in infections seem to have been spared.

California’s outbreaks have been particularly bad, however there is some improvement being seen. Similar patterns are visible in San Diego, Fresno, Riverside, and Orange County. Death rates in Riverside and Orange County are soaring.

The LA Times reports that over the last seven days, the state has averaged 27,087 cases per day (down 39.5% from two weeks ago. They report that roughly 8.1% of tests were positive. 4.7% of Californians have had their first vaccine doses. Below are some the state level stats reported by

Controlling Covid 19 Infections

President Biden’s plan is to enforce usage of masks in public, strong quarantines of travelers, and free up funding for more Covid 19 vaccinations. Up in Canada, vaccinations have been slowed due to a lack of vaccines from Pfizer. The Canadian government chose to get its vaccine supply from Europe instead of US locations, and Pfizer Europe has stopped production.

The UK is suffering the same lack of vaccines and it is reorganizing its vaccination strategy. Astra Zeneca also announced a big reduction in vaccine deliveries which has sent the country into a bit of a panic.

That’s our look at the Covid 19 spread and vaccination delivery to date. Our success in recovery means cooperation from all of us to socially distance, wear masks, use indoor air purification systems and get a vaccination shot as soon as possible. Please be safe and courteous in 2021!
